Comedian Modi Boycotts NYC Seder Event Over Controversial Mayor’s Anti-Israel Actions and Associations

Decision sparks backlash as concerns rise over political figures linked to anti-Israel rhetoric and troubling affiliations.

Jewish comedian Mordechai Rosenfeld, widely known as Modi, announced he will not attend the annual “Downtown Seder” in Lower Manhattan after learning that New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani is set to participate. The event, a Passover-themed fundraiser focused on peacebuilding, will still feature Israeli musician David Broza, but Modi’s withdrawal has drawn significant attention.

According to a statement shared by his representatives, Modi was unaware of Mamdani’s involvement until recently and chose to distance himself from the event. The mayor has faced ongoing criticism over previous decisions and positions related to Israel, including reversing policies adopted by his predecessor that aligned with widely recognized definitions of antisemitism and restricted official boycotts of Israel.

Additional controversies surrounding Mamdani have fueled public debate, including reported social media activity linked to his close circle and criticism over appearances at events where inflammatory remarks were made by others. Modi’s decision reflects growing concern among some figures in the Jewish community regarding political messaging and associations tied to Israel-related issues.
