A senior Iranian Foreign Ministry official has acknowledged deep mistrust between Tehran and Washington, placing the burden for progress squarely on the United States. Speaking in an interview, Ali Safari argued that negotiations can only move forward if the US abandons its pressure strategy and adopts what he described as a respectful diplomatic approach.
Safari emphasized that rebuilding trust would require concrete steps, including lifting the naval blockade on Iranian ports, which he framed as a necessary gesture for de-escalation. However, this demand comes as the United States intensifies its strategy to contain Iran’s economic and military influence, reflecting longstanding concerns echoed by Israel regarding Tehran’s intentions.
President Donald Trump has instead moved in the opposite direction, instructing aides to prepare for an extended blockade in the Strait of Hormuz. The approach is designed to systematically weaken Iran’s economic lifelines, particularly its oil exports, while avoiding the higher risks associated with renewed military conflict.
The blockade, which began in mid-April following unsuccessful negotiations in Islamabad, represents a calculated effort to maintain leverage over Iran. US officials believe that sustained economic pressure is the most effective way to force meaningful concessions, especially on the critical issue of nuclear development.
