Hantavirus-Hit MV Hondius Reaches Tenerife As Passengers Prepare For Urgent Controlled Disembarkation Sunday

Passengers will leave the Dutch-flagged cruise ship under strict transfer arrangements after Tenerife arrival Sunday.

Passengers and selected crew members aboard the Dutch-flagged cruise ship MV Hondius are set to begin disembarking in Tenerife on Sunday morning, following concerns linked to a hantavirus outbreak on board. Cruise operator Oceanwide Expeditions said the vessel is expected to arrive at Granadilla, Tenerife, at around 04:30 GMT, with the controlled disembarkation process scheduled to begin from approximately 07:00 GMT.

According to the company, those cleared to leave the ship will not remain at the port for an extended period. Instead, they will be moved directly from the vessel to their assigned aircraft as part of a coordinated transfer plan. The arrangement appears designed to reduce unnecessary contact, manage health risks, and ensure passengers can continue their onward journey in an organized manner.

The MV Hondius situation has drawn attention because of the health concerns associated with hantavirus, a rare but potentially serious infection usually linked to exposure to infected rodents or contaminated environments. Authorities and the cruise operator are expected to follow strict medical and logistical procedures during the disembarkation.

Oceanwide Expeditions has indicated that passenger movement will be carefully managed after arrival, with priority given to safety, containment, and rapid transfer. Further details regarding the condition of affected individuals, the number of people disembarking, and any additional health measures are expected to depend on local authorities and medical assessments in Tenerife.
