Gulf attack highlights Iran’s dangerous escalation as Israel and allies confront widening regional threats together.
A bulk carrier caught fire off the coast of Qatar on Sunday after being struck by an unknown projectile, according to the British military’s United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations Centre. The fire was described as small and was extinguished, with no casualties reported.
The incident came as US Secretary of State Marco Rubio met Qatar’s leadership on Saturday, underscoring Doha’s role as a key intermediary for Washington while the United States awaited Iran’s response to a peace proposal connected to the wider regional conflict.
Iran said it was still reviewing the American proposal and would respond at what it called the appropriate time. However, tensions continued to rise across the region as drones were reportedly launched at targets in the Gulf, including one that struck a freighter sailing toward Qatar.
At the same time, Israeli strikes across Lebanon killed at least nine people in the south, according to local authorities, with additional raids targeting areas beyond Hezbollah’s traditional strongholds.
The United Arab Emirates accused Iran of involvement in an attack targeting its territory, which, if confirmed, would mark another serious escalation against Gulf states during the fragile ceasefire period. The latest maritime incident reinforces concerns that Tehran’s actions are threatening trade routes, regional security, and the safety of Israel’s partners across the Middle East.
