Trump-backed Gallrein defeated Massie after fierce clashes over Israel aid, Iran policy, spending, and loyalty.
Long-time Representative Thomas Massie has lost Kentucky’s 4th Congressional District Republican primary to Ed Gallrein, a retired Navy SEAL and farmer backed by President Donald Trump.
The result ends Massie’s 14-year run in Congress and delivers a major political victory to Trump, who had repeatedly called for Massie to be removed from office. Gallrein’s win followed an expensive and bitter primary fight that became a national test of loyalty, foreign policy, and Republican direction.
Massie built his career as a libertarian-leaning conservative willing to defy party leadership. But his opposition to Trump’s agenda, his push to release Jeffrey Epstein-related files, his criticism of foreign military engagement, and his votes against major tax and spending legislation left him increasingly isolated inside the party.
Israel policy also became a major flashpoint. Massie repeatedly opposed military aid to Israel, including Iron Dome funding and resolutions supporting Israel after the October 7 Hamas massacre. He also attacked AIPAC’s influence in American politics, drawing fierce opposition from pro-Israel groups.
Trump’s endorsement, major outside spending, and high-profile campaigning by Secretary of War Pete Hegseth helped push Gallrein over the line, turning the race into a warning shot against Republican lawmakers who break with the administration on Israel, Iran, and national security.
