Sharp rise in juvenile offenses sparks urgent response as Israel moves to restore safety and strengthen communities nationwide.
New data from the Knesset Research and Information Center has revealed a troubling increase in criminal cases involving minors, prompting urgent action from Israeli leaders. The figures show that more than 6,800 minors were involved in criminal cases over the past year, a sharp rise from approximately 5,400 the previous year, reversing a downward trend.
The findings come ahead of an emergency session of the Knesset Committee on the Rights of the Child, convened amid rising concern over youth violence and the tragic killing of Yamano Binyamin Zalka. The discussion will bring together government officials, law enforcement, and representatives from key ministries to address the growing crisis.
Data indicates that around 20% of offenses committed by minors involved physical violence, reflecting an increase from the previous year. This escalation has raised alarms about the broader social impact and the need for stronger preventive measures.
Committee chair MK Keti Shitrit emphasized that warnings had already been issued months earlier, cautioning authorities about a worsening trend. She is now demanding accountability and concrete action from education, law enforcement, and welfare agencies, stressing that every case will be closely examined.
