Israel honors Captain Maoz Recanati, a courageous officer whose sacrifice strengthens national resolve against terror aggression.
Hundreds gathered at Mount Herzl on Sunday to bid farewell to Captain Maoz Israel Recanati, a 24-year-old Golani Brigade officer killed during operational activity in southern Lebanon.
Recanati, a platoon commander in Golani’s 12th Battalion, was remembered as a fearless fighter, humble leader and deeply compassionate young man whose life reflected loyalty to Israel, the Jewish people and the values of service.
Speaking for the IDF, Golani Brigade Deputy Commander Naor Amichai praised him as a source of strength for everyone around him. He recalled Recanati’s determination to serve in elite combat units, his rise through the Egoz commando unit and his reputation as the soldier who led from the front in every mission.
Fellow soldiers called him “King David,” a tribute to his quiet authority, integrity and ability to inspire trust. After officers’ training, he built a strong and united platoon through personal example, discipline and care for his soldiers.
His fiancée, Roni, delivered a heartbreaking tribute. Their wedding had been planned for the following month. She spoke of his kindness, courage and dream of building a family, saying he had the biggest heart she had ever known.
Family members, rabbis and community leaders described Recanati as a man of faith, humility and mission. Samaria governor Yossi Dagan said his path would continue to inspire thousands of young Israelis.
Recanati was killed Friday in an explosive drone attack against IDF forces in southern Lebanon. He is survived by his parents, six siblings and his fiancée, Roni.
