EU Condemns Ben Gvir Flotilla Video As Israel Defends Right To Stop Hamas Supporters

Netanyahu backs Israel’s blockade enforcement while rejecting Ben Gvir’s conduct as diplomatic backlash grows.

European Union foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas joined international criticism of National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir after he published footage of his encounter with detained participants from the pro-Hamas Gaza flotilla.

Kallas said the treatment of Global Sumud flotilla activists, including EU citizens, was degrading and wrong. She added that Ben Gvir’s conduct was unbecoming of anyone holding office in a democracy.

The controversy erupted after Ben Gvir visited a holding area at Ashdod Port where flotilla participants were detained after Israel stopped their attempt to reach Gaza. During the visit, one activist shouted “Free Palestine” before being removed by guards, while Israel’s national anthem was played over speakers.

Ben Gvir filmed himself waving an Israeli flag and addressing the detainees, declaring that “the summer camp is over” and warning that anyone acting against the State of Israel would face a determined country. He ended with the phrase “Am Israel Chai.”

The video triggered diplomatic fallout, with at least five countries announcing reprimand talks with Israeli ambassadors. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu defended Israel’s right to block provocative flotillas of Hamas supporters from reaching Gaza, but said Ben Gvir’s behavior did not reflect Israel’s values or norms. He ordered authorities to deport the activists as quickly as possible.

Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar also strongly criticized Ben Gvir, accusing him of damaging Israel’s diplomatic efforts and undermining the professional work of IDF soldiers, diplomats and state officials.

Ben Gvir rejected the criticism, insisting that Israel must stop acting like a punching bag and warning that those who enter Israeli territory to support Hamas will face a firm response.
