London arrests expose rising antisemitic threats as Jewish communities demand protection from extremist hate..
Counter-terrorism police in London arrested a man and a woman on Sunday after a suspected arson attack at the former East London Central Synagogue building in Whitechapel.
The incident took place early Tuesday morning, causing minor damage to gates and a lock at the entrance. No injuries were reported, but police said CCTV footage suggested the fire had been started deliberately.
The Metropolitan Police confirmed that a 45-year-old man and a 52-year-old woman were arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to commit arson. Both remain in police custody as Counter Terrorism Policing London leads the investigation because of the building’s Jewish history and the nature of the attack.
Commander Helen Flanagan described the arrests as a significant step, saying officers remain committed to identifying and charging those responsible for recent attacks targeting Jewish, Israeli, and Iranian sites. She stressed that hateful attacks on communities would not be tolerated.
Detective Superintendent Oliver Richter said the building had previously served as a synagogue and was being sold to a local Somali organization. He added that people of different faiths in the area had felt targeted and strongly condemned the attack.
The arrests come amid a disturbing wave of antisemitic incidents in London, including attacks on Jewish sites, a terrorism-linked stabbing investigation in Golders Green, and a separate TikTok hate crime in which two men admitted abusing a Jewish man near Stamford Hill.
