Johnny Garcia defeats radical challenger as Democrats reject anti-Zionist prison rhetoric and dangerous political extremism”
A bitter Democratic primary fight in Texas ended Tuesday with Johnny Garcia defeating Maureen Galindo in a runoff after Galindo triggered national outrage over antisemitic and extremist remarks.
Garcia, a public information officer for the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office, emerged as the mainstream party choice after Galindo faced widespread condemnation from Democrats across the political spectrum.
The controversy centered on Galindo’s Instagram post describing her plan to turn an ICE processing center in Karnes County into “a prison for American Zionists and former ICE officers.” The statement sparked immediate accusations of antisemitism and political extremism.
Galindo had led the initial March primary, but her campaign collapsed after the post drew backlash. She later claimed her words had been twisted and said she had always supported closing detention centers, but the explanation failed to stop the growing revolt inside her own party.
Democratic Senate nominee James Talarico refused to campaign with her, while Jewish Democratic Representatives Josh Gottheimer and Jared Moskowitz warned they would force a vote to expel her if she reached Congress.
Even Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez condemned Galindo’s post as “bigoted garbage” and endorsed Garcia, showing how broadly Galindo’s rhetoric was rejected.
Garcia’s victory signals a firm rejection of openly hostile anti-Zionist threats and demonstrates that even deeply divided Democrats can unite against rhetoric targeting Jews and supporters of Israel.
