IDF Uncovers Massive Hezbollah Tunnel Network Near Border, Exposing Long-Term Threat to Northern Israel Security

Israeli forces dismantle Iranian-backed tunnel system, preventing planned cross-border attacks and protecting civilian communities.

Israeli forces have uncovered and dismantled a significant underground tunnel network constructed by Hezbollah in southern Lebanon, revealing a long-term security threat near Israel’s northern border.

According to the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), the operation—based on precise intelligence—led to the discovery of two major tunnels in the Qantara area, stretching approximately two kilometers in total length and located about 10 kilometers from Israeli communities. The tunnels were part of a broader underground system developed over years and previously targeted during Operation Northern Arrows.

Inside the tunnels, troops found extensive infrastructure designed for prolonged use, including living quarters, water storage systems, and a large cache of weapons. One tunnel reportedly contained around ten sleeping rooms, indicating its use for housing operatives. Additional shafts connected to launch positions aimed toward Israeli territory, underscoring their operational purpose.

Israeli officials stated that such networks were built over roughly a decade, at significant depths underground, and formed part of a broader strategy to enable cross-border attacks targeting both military personnel and civilians.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu confirmed the operation, stating that Israeli forces had destroyed a major tunnel and would continue targeting similar infrastructure. He emphasized ongoing military activity across multiple regions in Lebanon aimed at neutralizing threats.

Netanyahu also addressed emerging aerial threats, noting that steps have been taken to accelerate solutions against explosive drone attacks. While acknowledging that such efforts will take time, he stressed that countermeasures are actively being developed and deployed.

The operation highlights ongoing security challenges along Israel’s northern front, as efforts continue to detect and dismantle underground and aerial threats that could destabilize the region.
