Haredi parties are increasing pressure on the coalition to accelerate legislation on the Draft Law, as the government explores a fast-track move aimed at advancing only the provision dealing with the release of draft-dodgers.
According to Kan, the coalition is considering removing all other sections from the conscription bill in order to push the measure forward quickly. However, Knesset legal adviser Sagit Afik has reportedly made clear in private discussions that she will oppose the maneuver on legal grounds.
Despite the legal complications involved in advancing such legislation through an expedited process, coalition officials appear determined to proceed.
Likud reportedly promised Shas chairman Aryeh Deri several days ago that the law would be brought to a vote. However, due to the legal complexity surrounding the move, the target date has now been pushed to Monday.
At the same time, United Torah Judaism chairman Moshe Gafni and other party members are rejecting the proposal as an insufficient solution. They continue to demand passage of the daycare subsidy law, even though the bill currently lacks a Knesset majority.
The dispute exposes widening cracks inside the coalition, with Shas pushing for movement on the Draft Law while UTJ insists that the daycare subsidy law remains the true political commitment Netanyahu must fulfill.
